Meet the Governors

Karen Weaver

I have been a governor at Carlton for the last 5 years and for the last two years, I have been Vice Chair. I have responsibility for making sure all the Governors are trained to meet their responsibilities and have the skills and experience to make effective decisions that will benefit the children, school and local community.

I have worked in HR for over 30 years and have recently set up as a Management Consultant to give me a better work-life balance. My passion is helping young people succeed in their chosen careers and I hope that some of these skills are beneficial in my role as a Governor.

This year I have taken on lead governor responsibility for Literacy so please ask me if you want to know more.

Hannah Johnson

I have been teaching at Carlton for three years in Upper Key Stage 2 and have recently joined the Governing Body as a Staff Governor. Originally from Hertfordshire, I have lived in Leeds since I started university in 2009, where I completed a BA in Childhood Studies. Whilst studying, I worked part-time in a nursery in Woodlesford and volunteered weekly at a primary school in Harehills. Following that, I gained my PGCE - during this, I worked in Halton Moor in KS1, Guiseley in LSK2 and was chosen for a placement at a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities school in Farsley. In September 2016 I completed a Masters Degree in Teaching.

Terry Baynes

300I am a LEA governor and this is my 5th year as a governor at Carlton Primary School. I am a member of the School Improvement Committee, head teacher performance committee and governor with responsibility for literacy. I am a retired teacher with 37 years experience, my last post was Foundation Stage Leader. I was the first male nursery manager in Leeds.

Jenny Harrison

I have been a governor for three years and am enjoying the opportunity to contribute to the running of Carlton Primary School.  I worked for many years in the housing sector in various roles, one of which was the Equality and Diversity Manager for one of the largest housing providers in England.  In 2014 I changed career to work in education for extended services in a diverse area of Leeds.  This brings a wealth of transferable skills, particularly with cluster working and provision.  I am halfway through a diploma in School Business Management, which is invaluable for my role as Chair of the Resources Committee.  I am a parent of a nine year old girl in year five, which helps me see the benefit of the good work and activities that happen at Carlton.  The school has gone from strength to strength every year she has been here.

Robert Riley

I have been involved with Carlton Primary School for 21 years from the time my son attended as a pupil, and a school governor for over 8 years, I have helped out in many ways School Trips, Swimming, and 10 residential visits to Cober Hill Cloughton, and at present involved with creating an open air learning environment in the Ozzlewell plantation.  I have an extended knowledge of the local community and its infrastructure, and a passion and commitment with all matters related to the school its pupils, parents, staff, and governors. I have acquired many skill in my life time and hope I can pass them on.

Angela Howarth

I have been a governor at Carlton School for 10 years. This is my first year as Chair of the governing body I am delighted to lead such a dedicated and committed group of governors. We have done some great work in the past and we are continually striving to do more. Prior to being Chair of governors I was chair of the School Improvement committee for 2 years. I also have responsibility for complaints, maths, headteacher’s performance and compiling the figures from the parents’ questionnaires. Although both my children left Carlton Primary some years ago I have stayed on as a governor because I believe strongly about making the school the best it can be.   I worked for a number of years at British Telecom then took a break to bring up my children, I am now working as a Business Support Officer in Legal Services at Wakefield Council.

Pauline Ward

This is my second year as a co - opted governor at Carlton Primary. I am a recently retired headteacher in South Leeds and I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue my association with both education and the local area. I have a wide range of skills to offer the school having spent nearly 25 years in education. I have a passion and enthusiasm for ensuring that our children receive the best possible education to enable them to achieve their true potential in whatever their chosen path is. I am governor with responsibilities for pupil premium, data and assessment and I have recently taken on the role of Chair of the School Improvement Sub - committee.

Nichola Tolan

I have two children at Carlton Primary School and this is my first year as a co-opted governor. I am a qualified social worker and have experience in safeguarding, promoting the needs of 'looked after' children and working closely with children who have special educational needs. My current role is as a principal social worker working with children on the edge of care and supporting families to remain together where possible. I believe I have the understanding and experience necessary to fulfil my role as a governor at Carlton and am passionate about the needs and wellbeing of the children in our local area.

David Coe

I am the Head Teacher of Carlton Primary School and have been so since September 2015.  Before that I was the Deputy Head Teacher here for four years, during which time I attended all the governors meetings and so got to know all the Governors really well.  I have also taught at Templenewsam Halton Primary School in Leeds and Longman’s Hill Primary School in Selby where I specialised in Maths and PE.

Alison Bornshin (Awaiting photo)

I have just started as a co-opted governor at Carlton Primary having been retired from my teaching in Secondary education for 1 year now. I live locally and felt joining as a governor would not only bring in my knowledge of education in secondary school, but my children attended Rodillian school and I have always had a good relationship with the people involved in their education. My background is in Design, and have taught Design Technology and Art in my position in school, but have always enjoyed spending time outside lessons encouraging children to develop skills,  and to just enjoy making things! I still create my own things as I regularly do craft and vintage fairs and hope to be able help out in the school in whatever way I can.

Laura Yates (Awating photo)

I have recently joined the governing body as a staff governor. I work in the school as HLTA with years one, two and three and work as LSA with year two. I have been working at Carlton primary school for one year now and have truly enjoyed every minute since being here. Before joining Carltons staff team I worked in the early year’s sector for over seven years. During this time two of them years were spent working and living in Australia as the Lead educator at a large educational service. I am very passionate about outdoor education and all of the opportunities that can be offered to children. I have completed my level 3 Forest School training this year and will be delivering the programme to the pupils in the very near future.

Nicola Upsall (Awaiting photo)

This is my first year as a co-opted governor at Carlton Primary.  My two children have recently started at Carlton primary school which has led to me wanting to learn more about their education and play an active role in the success of the school.  I currently work at Lloyds Banking Group as a Senior Accountant so will be using all the transferrable skills gained from my job to ensure I am doing the best I can for the school and the governing body.  My main areas of experience are in finance, HR and project management.  I’m really excited to be joining the Carlton Primary School governing body and am looking forward to any challenges that lay ahead.
