Meet the Governors

Sarah Fitzgerald

I have been a governor for 11 years. During this time I have been the Chair. I have completed training as the chair, school finance and the induction programmes as well as whole governing body training on data, special needs, safeguarding and OFSTED preparation. I am a qualified accountant and work in higher education as a lecturer.

Karen Weaver

I am Vice Chair and a member of the School Improvement Committee. I have been a governor at Carlton since July 2013. I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and work full-time as a Senior HR Business Partner at Leeds City Council. I hope that my qualifications, skills and experience will support the continuous improvement of such a great school.

Hannah Johnson

I have been teaching at Carlton for three years in Upper Key Stage 2 and have recently joined the Governing Body as a Staff Governor. Originally from Hertfordshire, I have lived in Leeds since I started university in 2009, where I completed a BA in Childhood Studies. Whilst studying, I worked part-time in a nursery in Woodlesford and volunteered weekly at a primary school in Harehills. Following that, I gained my PGCE - during this, I worked in Halton Moor in KS1, Guiseley in LSK2 and was chosen for a placement at a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities school in Farsley. In September 2016 I completed a Masters Degree in Teaching.

Terry Baynes

300I am a LEA governor and this is my 5th year as a governor at Carlton Primary School. I am a member of the School Improvement Committee, head teacher performance committee and governor with responsibility for literacy. I am a retired teacher with 37 years experience, my last post was Foundation Stage Leader. I was the first male nursery manager in Leeds.

Jenny Harrison

I have been a governor for 2 years and am enjoying the opportunity to contribute to the running of Carlton Primary School. I worked for many years in the housing sector in various roles, one of which was the Equality & Diversity Manager for one of the largest housing providers in England.  In 2014 I changed career to work in education for extended services in a diverse area of Leeds.  This brings a wealth of transferable skills, particularly with cluster working and provision. I am the parent of an eight year old girl in year four, which helps me see the benefit of all the good work and activities that happen at Carlton.

Robert Riley

I have been involved with Carlton Primary School for 21 years from the time my son attended as a pupil, and a school governor for over 8 years, I have helped out in many ways School Trips, Swimming, and 10 residential visits to Cober Hill Cloughton, and at present involved with creating an open air learning environment in the Ozzlewell plantation.  I have an extended knowledge of the local community and its infrastructure, and a passion and commitment with all matters related to the school its pupils, parents, staff, and governors. I have acquired many skill in my life time and hope I can pass them on.

Angela Howarth

I am a co-opted governor and this is my 9th year as a governor at Carlton School. I work as a business support office in legal services at Wakefield Council. I started as a parent governor when both my children were pupils at Carlton (they are presently studying at Rodillian Academy). During my time as a governor I have served on both sub committees, organised the governors’ Christmas stall, I’m the governor with responsibilities for mathematics and I have just recently taken on the role of chair of the School Improvement Sub Committee.

Lindsey Strachan

I am a parent governor with a son at the school. I work at the University of Leeds as an Educational Engagement Officer, running events/ projects for children with the aim of raising their attainment and aspirations. This means I have a good knowledge of the educational landscape in the UK. Having a History degree, this is an area of the curriculum which particularly interests me and which I would like to help the school develop. I am very experienced in child protection and safeguarding as a result of my work and have represented these areas on the governing body. I have experience of HR and financial management through my employment, hence my contribution to the Resources Sub-Committee. I also have significant experience in marketing/public relations and event management and am always willing to use these skills to assist the school as required.

Pauline Ward

This is my first year as a co-opted governor at Carlton Primary. Having recently retired as a primary head teacher in South Leeds, I felt that I would like to continue my association with both education and the local area and I am delighted to be chosen to serve as a governor at Carlton. I bring to the governing body a wide range of skills from 23 years in education. I have a passion and enthusiasm for ensuring that all our children receive the best possible education to enable them to reach their true potential in whatever their chosen path is.  I am looking forward to being involved with the school and in particular meeting the pupils, supporting their education in whatever way I can.

Nichola Tolan

I have two children at Carlton Primary School and this is my first year as a co-opted governor. I am a qualified social worker and have experience in safeguarding, promoting the needs of 'looked after' children and working closely with children who have special educational needs. My current role is as a principal social worker working with children on the edge of care and supporting families to remain together where possible. I believe I have the understanding and experience necessary to fulfil my role as a governor at Carlton and am passionate about the needs and wellbeing of the children in our local area.

David Coe

I am the Head Teacher of Carlton Primary School and have been so since September 2015.  Before that I was the Deputy Head Teacher here for four years, during which time I attended all the governors meetings and so got to know all the Governors really well.  I have also taught at Templenewsam Halton Primary School in Leeds and Longman’s Hill Primary School in Selby where I specialised in Maths and PE.
