Meet the Governors

Karen Weaver

I have been a governor at Carlton for the last 5 years and for the last two years, I have been Vice Chair. I have responsibility for making sure all the Governors are trained to meet their responsibilities and have the skills and experience to make effective decisions that will benefit the children, school and local community.

I have worked in HR for over 30 years and have recently set up as a Management Consultant to give me a better work-life balance. My passion is helping young people succeed in their chosen careers and I hope that some of these skills are beneficial in my role as a Governor.

This year I have taken on lead governor responsibility for Literacy so please ask me if you want to know more.

Hannah Johnson

I have been teaching at Carlton for three years in Upper Key Stage 2 and have recently joined the Governing Body as a Staff Governor. Originally from Hertfordshire, I have lived in Leeds since I started university in 2009, where I completed a BA in Childhood Studies. Whilst studying, I worked part-time in a nursery in Woodlesford and volunteered weekly at a primary school in Harehills. Following that, I gained my PGCE - during this, I worked in Halton Moor in KS1, Guiseley in LSK2 and was chosen for a placement at a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities school in Farsley. In September 2016 I completed a Masters Degree in Teaching.

Robert Riley

I have been involved with Carlton Primary School for 21 years from the time my son attended as a pupil, and a school governor for over 8 years, I have helped out in many ways School Trips, Swimming, and 10 residential visits to Cober Hill Cloughton, and at present involved with creating an open air learning environment in the Ouzlewell plantation.  I have an extended knowledge of the local community and its infrastructure, and a passion and commitment with all matters related to the school its pupils, parents, staff, and governors. I have acquired many skills in my life time and hope I can pass them on.

Pauline Ward

This is my second year as a co - opted governor at Carlton Primary. I am a recently retired headteacher in South Leeds and I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue my association with both education and the local area. I have a wide range of skills to offer the school having spent nearly 25 years in education. I have a passion and enthusiasm for ensuring that our children receive the best possible education to enable them to achieve their true potential in whatever their chosen path is. I am governor with responsibilities for pupil premium, data and assessment and I have recently taken on the role of Chair of the School Improvement Sub - committee.

Nichola Tolan

I have two children at Carlton Primary School and this is my first year as a co-opted governor. I am a qualified social worker and have experience in safeguarding, promoting the needs of 'looked after' children and working closely with children who have special educational needs. My current role is as a principal social worker working with children on the edge of care and supporting families to remain together where possible. I believe I have the understanding and experience necessary to fulfil my role as a governor at Carlton and am passionate about the needs and wellbeing of the children in our local area.

David Coe

I am the Head Teacher of Carlton Primary School and have been so since September 2015.  Before that I was the Deputy Head Teacher here for four years, during which time I attended all the governors meetings and so got to know all the Governors really well.  I have also taught at Templenewsam Halton Primary School in Leeds and Longman’s Hill Primary School in Selby where I specialised in Maths and PE.

Alison Bornshin

I have just started as a co-opted governor at Carlton Primary having been retired from my teaching in Secondary education for 1 year now. I live locally and felt joining as a governor would not only bring in my knowledge of education in secondary school, but my children attended Rodillian school and I have always had a good relationship with the people involved in their education. My background is in Design, and have taught Design Technology and Art in my position in school, but have always enjoyed spending time outside lessons encouraging children to develop skills,  and to just enjoy making things! I still create my own things as I regularly do craft and vintage fairs and hope to be able help out in the school in whatever way I can.

Laura Yates

I have recently joined the governing body as a staff governor. I work in the school as HLTA with years one, two and three and work as LSA with year two. I have been working at Carlton primary school for one year now and have truly enjoyed every minute since being here. Before joining the Carlton staff team I worked in the early year’s sector for over seven years. During this time two of those years were spent working and living in Australia as the Lead educator at a large educational service. I am very passionate about outdoor education and all of the opportunities that can be offered to children. I have completed my level 3 Forest School training this year and will be delivering the programme to the pupils in the very near future.

Nicola Upsall

I joined the governing body in September 2017 as a co-opted governor.  My two children have recently started at Carlton primary school which has led to me wanting to learn more about their education and play an active role in the success of the school.  I currently work at Lloyds Banking Group as a Senior Accountant so will be using all the transferrable skills gained from my job to ensure I am doing the best I can for the school and the governing body.  My main areas of experience are in finance, HR and project management which are of great use in my current role as Chair of the Resources committee, which commenced in September 2018.

Neal Taylor

I joined as a parent governor in October 2017, working as part of the School Improvement Committee.  We analyse data, help to formulate robust plans, check for statutory compliance and undertake regular monitoring visits to verify the progress being made.  I have Business Management and Secondary teaching qualifications with experience working in both fields.  I use my work skills and represent my views as a Carlton parent in my role as governor.  Our Staff, parents and governors help to make our school a great place to learn and our children generate a positive learning environment with kind and thoughtful attitudes.  We can all feel proud of our school.

Andrew Lupton (Awaiting Photo)

I was elected as a parent governor in July 2018 and have since been involved in both the school improvement and resources committees. I have been involved in primary education for the past 14 years and am a serving deputy head teacher at a school in Bradford. In my role there I continue to lead maths and teach children with Special Educational Needs and have a lead role in safeguarding as well as supporting the head with analysis of school data. I hope to be able to use my experience to support the school in providing the best possible education and experience for the children of Carlton.
