Meet the Governors

Karen Weaver

I have been a governor at Carlton for the last 5 years and for the last two years, I have been Vice Chair. I have responsibility for making sure all the Governors are trained to meet their responsibilities and have the skills and experience to make effective decisions that will benefit the children, school and local community.

I have worked in HR for over 30 years and have recently set up as a Management Consultant to give me a better work-life balance. My passion is helping young people succeed in their chosen careers and I hope that some of these skills are beneficial in my role as a Governor.

This year I have taken on lead governor responsibility for Literacy so please ask me if you want to know more.

Pauline Ward

I have been a co-opted governor at Carlton Primary since 2016. I am a retired headteacher, having taught in South Leeds and I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue my association with both education and the local area. I have a wide range of skills to offer the school having spent nearly 25 years in education. I have a passion and enthusiasm for ensuring that our children receive the best possible education to enable them to achieve their true potential in whatever their chosen path is. I am governor with responsibilities for pupil premium, data and assessment and I have recently taken on the role of Chair of both the School Improvement and resources sub - committees.

Nicola Upsall

I joined the governing body in September 2017 as a co-opted governor.  My two children have recently started at Carlton primary school which has led to me wanting to learn more about their education and play an active role in the success of the school.  I currently work at Lloyds Banking Group as a Senior Accountant so will be using all the transferrable skills gained from my job to ensure I am doing the best I can for the school and the governing body.  My main areas of experience are in finance, HR and project management which are of great use in my current role as Co-Chair of Governors, which commenced in September 2019.

Neal Taylor

I joined as a parent governor in October 2017, working as part of the School Improvement Committee.  We analyse data, help to formulate robust plans, check for statutory compliance and undertake regular monitoring visits to verify the progress being made.  I have Business Management and Secondary teaching qualifications with experience working in both fields.  I use my work skills and represent my views as a Carlton parent in my role as governor.  Our Staff, parents and governors help to make our school a great place to learn and our children generate a positive learning environment with kind and thoughtful attitudes.  We can all feel proud of our school.

Andrew Lupton

I was elected as a parent governor in July 2018 and have since been involved in both the school improvement and resources committees. I have been involved in primary education for the past 14 years and am a serving deputy head teacher at a school in Bradford. In my role there I continue to lead maths and teach children with Special Educational Needs and have a lead role in safeguarding as well as supporting the head with analysis of school data. I hope to be able to use my experience to support the school in providing the best possible education and experience for the children of Carlton.

Ruth Petzold

I joined the governor team in 2020 as a co-opted governor.  My son started Carlton in 2017, so I am looking forward to learning more about the eduction system and playing an active role in the life of the school.  I have over 15 years experience in HR in a number of roles including ER, recruitment, business partnering policy and project management.  I am currently an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager in the health and social care sector and am passionate about making sure there is equality of opportunity for all.  I hope I can support the governor and staff teams to create a fair and inclusive environment for everyone who learns and works in the school, as well as helping to ensure the children leaving Carlton have an understanding and respect for different backgrounds and cultures.

Pauline Varnals

I am married with a daughter living in London and a son in Carlton.  I began my career working for a television network in Central London.  Following a number of years with my young family, I joined the London Borough of Barnet where I became Head of Marketing and Events.  I was also responsible for all Mayoral and Council activities in general.  My experience in local authority matters led to an appointment with a Junior School in North London as a governor, a position which I held until moving to Carlton in 2007.  Since moving into the village I have been an active member of the Carlton Village Residents Association.  I have also worked with a church group on the GRACE project raising funds for the educational needs of children in the Ho district in Ghana.  I am pleased to have this opportunity to be involved with the school and use my experience to meet the challenges that face education in general and Carlton primary school in particular.
