Art & Design

Our leading expert, who ensures Art & Design strategies are linked across the school-age groups, is Mrs Hawkshaw.

Overview

Wherever appropriate, art is linked to topics and the wider curriculum as it gives children the opportunities to bring a topic to life. At Carlton we use nationally celebrated days, such as Remembrance Day, to encourage a love of art and create whole school displays. Children also explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists, designers and different cultures.

Art should enable the children to communicate what they see, feel and think. Children should experiment collaboratively and independently with their ideas, use of colour, texture, form, pattern, different materials and processes. Self-evaluation of work is encouraged and Carlton teaches that it is a safe environment to make mistakes. From this, children are taught how to be resilient and therefore achieve their goals.
