Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage!
At Carlton, our Early Years Foundation Stage is a place where children feel happy, valued and inspired to learn. We believe that children learn best through meaningful experiences, purposeful play and opportunities to explore, investigate and make sense of the world around them. We encourage children to be curious, creative and resilient, developing a lifelong love of learning from the very beginning.
Reading is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that developing a love of books, stories, rhymes and language opens the door to a world of imagination, knowledge and possibility. Through sharing stories, enjoying books together and creating rich opportunities for talk, we nurture children’s communication, vocabulary and confidence, while helping them to develop a genuine love of reading that will stay with them throughout their lives.
Our engaging indoor and outdoor environments provide rich opportunities for children to follow their interests, develop their ideas and learn through first-hand experiences. From creating, building and problem-solving to exploring nature and getting messy, children are encouraged to learn through doing, discovering and experimenting. We carefully plan experiences that build on children’s interests and provide the right level of challenge, while giving them the freedom to explore and develop their own ideas.
We place a strong emphasis on developing independent and confident learners. Children are encouraged to make choices, share their ideas, persevere when things are challenging and take pride in what they can achieve. Through thoughtful questioning, challenge and skilful adult interactions, we help children to think deeply, solve problems and become increasingly confident in applying their learning.
Our connection with the natural world is an important part of life in EYFS. Through Forest School experiences, children have regular opportunities to explore, investigate and learn outdoors. These experiences build confidence, resilience, independence and teamwork, while nurturing a sense of wonder and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
We believe that community matters. Strong relationships between children, families, school and the wider community create a supportive environment in which every child can thrive. We value families as partners in their child’s learning and celebrate the unique experiences, cultures, interests and strengths that each child brings to our school.
Above all, we recognise that every child is unique. We celebrate individual achievements, interests and starting points, providing the encouragement, challenge and experiences each child needs to flourish. Our aim is for every child to leave the Early Years as a happy, capable, independent and confident learner, with a love of reading, a curiosity about the world and the foundations they need to embrace the next stage of their learning journey.

Rolling Programmes
Our Provision
All staff use the Early Years framework to carefully plan and provide creative, cross curricular learning opportunities. Play based opportunities are provided through provision areas, these will follow our rolling programme closely alongside following the children's interests. All staff in Early Years are hands on with the children and love getting immersed in the children's learning, in addition the class teachers also follow the role of the key person.

Outdoor Provision
We are extremely lucky to have an amazing outdoor area which we call our outdoor classroom. The opportunities that the outdoors provide us with are endless, no matter what the weather! There is something for every child outdoors whether that be the bike area, the construction area, the planting area or our Carlton's got Talent stage.

Tapestry
We use Tapestry in EYFS to share children's learning and to communicate with parents. Please ensure you are checking Tapestry weekly for all communication and pictures from the weeks learning. We look forward to seeing learning shared from home too to share in class with the children!
